Here at Port Hills Physio + Pilates we have a wonderful team of experienced and capable Physiotherapists and Pilates Instructors working well together. We value working together with you, the patient, and your whanau, to best address your health issues and challenges. We seek to understand what is affecting your health, and how to achieve your goals.

We offer generous appointment times in order to assess and understand how your pain/injury is affecting you and your life. We feel that it is important to identify any obstacles that are in the way of your recovery. These obstacles present in different ways for different people. We value the importance of listening to you, of education and exercise, as well as Movement, Manual therapy, Acupuncture, Dry needling and Soft Tissue Mobilisation.

Pilates studio is where we are able to offer one on one assessment and treatment, duos and small classes up to 4  people max.

We also offer:

  • Hydrotherapy  – small classes of 4-5 people. (not under RED level in Covid pandemic)
  • Breathing Disorder Assessments and management

We are located near the Cashmere Hills, adjacent to Cashmere Health and Cashmere Pharmacy.

Sarah Betteridge – Physiotherapist focussing on Shoulders

We look forward to welcoming Sarah to the Port Hills Physio+Pilates team in August 2022. Sarah is a highly qualified Physiotherapist and will be seeing Shoulder conditions only. Sarah trained in England qualifying in 2001 and moved to New Zealand in 2011. She completed her Masters studies at the University of Otago in 2019. In 2020 she completed a two year internship with Dr Angela Cadogan (registered physiotherapy specialist in shoulders).
Sarah sits on the executive committee of the NZ Manipulative Physiotherapists Association. She also teaches the shoulder component of the NZMPA courses for physiotherapists. Sarah provides expert opinion to the Health and Disability Commission and is a competency reviewer for physiotherapy New Zealand. She published research on the use of steroid injection in shoulder bursitis early this year. Sarah also works in a diagnostic role with shoulder specialist Mr. Alex Malone at St Georges Hospital.
Sarah has a broad musculoskeletal background, but her area of expertise is in shoulder problems. In
clinic you will find Sarah is passionate about listening to what you need. By ensuring you are given
comprehensive information, you will be able to make informed choices together on the best
treatment for you to achieve your goals. Sarah will provide you with information and advice,
exercises and hands on treatment as needed.
Outside of the clinic Sarah enjoys running, open water swimming and adventure races. She is outside
exploring our beautiful country with her family as much as she possibly can.

Aroha Wigram – Physiotherapist + Pilates Instructor (Reformer + Mat)

After graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (distinction) from the University of Otago in 2005, Aroha has worked in musculoskeletal physiotherapy both here and in Melbourne. She offers a range of hands on manual therapy techniques, which she incorporates with clear patient education and exercise prescription (including Pilates) to empower patients in getting back to activities they love.

Having also worked in chronic pain and neuro-rehabilitation settings, she appreciates the importance of a holistic approach. She joined our team in January 2022.

Outside of physiotherapy, Aroha enjoys spending time with her partner and two children, being outdoors including mountain biking and gardening, and thinks hard about treading lightly on the earth.

Ellie Campbell – Physiotherapist

Ellie recently joined our team after the Aug/Sept lockdown. We love having her on our team. Ellie is friendly, mature and passionate about Life and Physiotherapy.

Ellie completed her physiotherapy degree at the University of Otago in 2016.  She has worked in Dunedin and Christchurch in musculoskeletal , chronic pain and neuro rehabilitation settings.

Ellie has a particular interest in pain rehabilitation using a whole person approach. She loves education to help empower patients to understand their condition well so they can have the tools to best recover. She is passionate about helping patients to get back to the activities most important to them. To achieve this she uses a combination of education, exercise based rehabilitation and hands on treatments.

Outside of work Ellie is involved with running a youth group alongside her husband, Ethan, at Grace Vineyard Church. She also enjoys running, ultimate frisbee, winning board games and spending time with friends.

 

Rachel Jansen – Physiotherapist

Rachel completed her physiotherapy degree at the University of Otago.  She has worked in both hospital and Musculoskeletal private practice in NZ and the UK.

Rachel has a particular interest in mind body healthcare and using a whole person approach in treating any condition.

Her particular focus is in the area of Breathing Pattern disorders, anxiety and lifestyle factors that affect our health and wellbeing.

Rachel is trained in the BradCliff breathing Method which was developed by Auckland Physiotherapists, Dinah Bradley and Tania Clifton-Smith, who are recognized experts in this field and have published many articles and written several books.

Rachel loves helping patients understand what leads to Breathing dysfunction, and seeing them restore their confidence and wellbeing through simple effective breathing techniques.

Outside of work Rachel enjoys mountain biking, kite surfing,  skiing and adventures in the outdoors with her husband and 3 active children.

Maggie Davies – Physiotherapist + Pilates Instructor (Mat)

Maggie trained in Scotland and worked in the public sector there for 4 years before immigrating to New Zealand.

In physiotherapy Maggie particularly loves helping people get back to the activities they enjoy. Maggie’s passion is in getting to grips with the bio mechanical causes of issues. She often using hands on techniques to help settle pain and rehab exercises to prevent recurrence and to help people achieve their goals.

Maggie is APPI Mat Pilates trained and enjoys integrating her Physio with her Pilates knowledge.

Outside of physiotherapy Maggie enjoys running (lots of running) and loves spending time doing outdoor activities with her husband Mark and their three young children.

She has recently completed her Certificate in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (COMT) and started working with us on 16 March 2020 just before lockdown #1.

 

 

 

Melanie Orr – Pilates Instructor (All Equipment + Mat)

Melanie has been teaching Pilates since 2004. She first qualified in London, UK with Body Control Pilates and went on to run her own Pilates business for 8 years in Chelmsford, Essex. She returned home to Christchurch in late 2012. Since returning to New Zealand, Melanie has completed further training with Polestar and is now a qualified studio instructor.

Melanie enjoys the challenge of helping clients benefit from Pilates and also continuing her own professional development as a teacher. Melanie believe it is a privilege to work with all her clients and wants them to gain as much as they can from Pilates.  She is very experienced in teaching 1-1’s, mat classes and using the Pilates Equipment as well. She uses small props to make the classes more variable and interesting. Melanie has done some professional development in the management of Osteoporosis.

Melanie joined the team in October 2020 and works part time from Monday through to Wednesday. She is an asset to our team.

Joanne Kennedy – Physiotherapist

Jo Kennedy joined the Port Hills Physio + Pilates team in October 2018. Jo trained in the UK at Manchester Metropolitan University. She went on to receive her Masters in Advanced Neuromuscular Physiotherapy at King’s College London in 2013, with Distinction.

Jo has worked in the Public and Private sector in the UK and is very experienced in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients using a Holistic, person-centred approach incorporating manual therapy, exercises tailored to patient’s goals, acupuncture, hydrotherapy and group exercise classes. Jo is extremely resourceful and dedicated to her profession. She gives 100% all the time. Her bubbly nature puts you at ease the moment that you meet her.

From June 2021, Jo reduced her clinical hours and is doing an Internship, with the goal of becoming a Physiotherapy Specialist. She will continue to work part-time at Port Hills Physio + Pilates.

Jo and Gary have a young family, and her interests outside of work and family, are Road cycling and Mountain biking.

She is an asset to our team and we enjoy working alongside and learning from her.

 

Lesley Smith – Physiotherapist

Lesley Smith graduated from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and worked in the Public and Private sector for 9 years before she immigrated to NZ. She registered with the NZ Physiotherapy board in 2000. She is a member of the NZMPA and PNZ .

Lesley enjoys working with people, and loves the challenge of problem solving.  She has a hands-on approach, using manual and manipulative therapy along with Soft Tissue and Trigger Point release techniques, Dry Needling and exercise prescription to help people get back to what they enjoy doing in life. She has just begun to explore a Functional Movement Approach and is enjoying the challenge of integrating this approach into her assessment and treatment plans.

She enjoys treating all Musculoskeletal Conditions and  Sports’ Injuries. She has a Certificate in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and thoroughly enjoys seeing her patients recover from injury.

Lesley is married to Paul and has 3 growing sons. She enjoys playing tennis, running, walking and being outdoors. She is now a dog-lover too.

 

Reception Team

Kristen Steele is our Practice Manager and Receptionist, along with Justine Rerekura, Mari Schuster, and Aroha Skinner.

This team share the reception role at our clinic and are your first point of contact with our clinic.  They will be able to help you should you ring in to make an appointment.
